Midland Street is more than a destination—it is a living piece of West Bay City history. Its story reaches back to the rise of West Bay City during the booming lumber era of the 1800s, when sawmills, shipbuilding, fishing, salt production, railroads, and commerce transformed the west side of the Saginaw River into a thriving industrial community. By the late 1860s, Midland Street had emerged as an important commercial corridor, with businesses, offices, shops, and gathering places serving the rapidly growing community.

Many of the historic commercial buildings that give Midland Street its distinctive character were constructed between 1867 and 1929, showcasing architectural styles ranging from Queen Anne and Romanesque to Georgian Revival, Art Deco, and Chicago Style. The district’s buildings tell the story of generations of entrepreneurs, workers, families, and businesses that helped shape West Bay City.

When West Bay City and Bay City were united in 1905, Midland Street remained an important part of the city’s identity. Its historic commercial district was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, helping preserve a remarkable connection to Bay City’s past.

Today, Midland Street continues to evolve while maintaining the character that has made it special for more than a century.
